Nowadays, the spread rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is increasing amongst individuals aged 15 to 29 years old, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The microorganisms that cause these infections are bacteria and/ or viruses. An STI that is bacterial in origin, like chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea, is treatable. However, if left undiagnosed and untreated, it could lead to more complicated conditions, like infertility and severe chronic abdominal pain. Because of this, many hospitals and medical centres in Australia hire GP doctors who specialise in STI cases.
On the other hand, STIs that are caused by a virus, like the human immunodeficiency virus or commonly known as HIV, cannot be treated. The patient may experience ulcers and lesions to various parts of the body that attract opportunistic bacteria to grow quickly. That is why many medical experts recommend undergoing physical examinations from a trusted GP doctor every 6 months.
Preventing STI is one click away
We always hear the phrase “prevention is better than cure” from many GP doctors every time we visit a clinic. Medical specialists always emphasise the importance of practicing safe sex to prevent acquiring these infections. In fact, the Australian government pushed through sex education to be included in every university. In addition to this, allied health practitioners and people who have been diagnosed with HIV are conducting presentations for young people in secondary schools for complete awareness.
If you want to know your current health condition or you just want to have a check-up routine, you can get a GP booking online. You can visit www.smartclinics.com.au/ to get more information about sexually transmitted diseases, how to prevent them, and how to cure them. Consulting a trusted and experienced GP who specialises in women’s health that includes reproductive health is necessary, especially for those individuals who are sexually active.
What to expect
To rule out the infection, your doctor will need to do a pap smear. A procedure that requires your doctor to collect sample specimen from the cervix and vaginal wall. The process is easy and painless, and basically there is no need for preparation. The examination will determine asymptomatic infections and able to evaluate any abnormalities that can be cancerous in nature.
According to GP doctors, pap smear should be done once a year for individuals who are sexually active for maximum prevention of possible STI. For women or individuals who are not sexually active, once every two years is recommended by the medical experts.
When you search “good GP near me” online, you will have an option to choose where to go. There are many medical centres around that will provide you the service that you need. However, when it comes to holistic approach, you might want to consider visiting the right clinics nearby.
